Famous Authors of the Nineteenth Century
Guy de Maupassant was a French author from the city of Dieppe. He was born in a Chateau known as Château de Miromesnil.
Guy de Maupassant has written many works over the years, and, even if readers have never heard of Maupassant himself, his work can be identified due to it's trick endings, plot twists, and the main character's unhappiness with their social standing. This can be seen in de Maupassant's most famous work, The Necklace. Guy de Maupassant's work was influenced by the Franco-Prussian War, the behavior of the bourgeoisie, and the fashionable lifestyle that was seen in Paris. |
Alexander Pushkin was a Russian author from the city of Moscow, the capital. He is well known for his works, I Have Returned and The Queen of Spades.
Pushkin has often used parody, idioms, and popular and localized speech in his works. This localized speech included Russian and other Slavic languages. Critics have written that Pushkin's work was inspired by the great Russian writer Nikolai Gogov, the Russian government controlling speech, and the love of his life, Anna Kern. Pushkin's work, I Have Returned, is actually a sort of biography, since it tells the story of a man in exile. |
Leo Tolstoy, another Russian writer, was from the region of Tula, which is directly to the southwest of Moscow.
Tolstoy is most famously known for his work, War and Peace, but, as we learn from the movie, Independence Day", Tolstoy's works have been often characterized as smart, modest, and exciting. It has been said that Mr. Tolstoy was influenced by Pacifism and the Bible.

Anton Chekhov, the last Russian writer on our list, is from the city of Taganrog, near the Russian coast. He is well-known for his works, The Cherry Orchard, and The Three Sisters.
His writing is characterized as original, heartfelt, and honest. Now, does that mean honest in a nice way or does it mean brutally honest? Well, go pick up a Chekhov classic and find out for yourself! Mr. Chekhov's writing could possibly be influenced by his medicinal background, his trips outside of Russia, and his wife, Olga. |
